The meaning

“Town of the big house (Baile an Ti Mhoir)”

How it got the name

The Calvert family held the Irish title Baron Baltimore, taken from a village in County Cork whose Gaelic name, Baile an Ti Mhoir, means 'town of the big house.' Maryland was the Calverts' proprietary colony, and its greatest port carries their title.
