The meaning

“Saint Botolph's stone”

How it got the name

Puritan colonists renamed the Shawmut peninsula after Boston in Lincolnshire, the town many of them had left. That English name is itself a contraction of 'Botolph's Stone,' marking a boundary stone or church associated with the 7th-century Saxon saint Botolph, patron of travelers.
