How it got the name

Spanish charts from the 1560s label the headland Cabo Canaveral, from canaveral, a place thick with cane or reeds. It is one of the oldest surviving European place-names in the United States. In 1963 it was renamed Cape Kennedy; Florida reversed the change in 1973 after ten years of public objection.
