The meaning
“Charles's town”
How it got the name
Founded in 1670 as Charles Town for the restored Stuart king who had granted the Carolina charter. After independence the town corporation formally contracted the name to Charleston in 1783, quietly compressing a royal tribute into something that no longer sounded like one.
