Cheyenne

Wyoming (WY)est. 1867pop. 65,132/shy-AN/

The meaning

“Speakers of a foreign tongue / red talkers”

How it got the name

The railroad town took the name of the Cheyenne nation — but that name is not what the Cheyenne call themselves. It is a Dakota Sioux exonym, Sahiyena, roughly 'people of an alien speech.' The Cheyenne name for themselves is Tsitsistas.
