The meaning

“Dove (Latin columba)”

How it got the name

Ohio legislators created a capital on empty ground opposite Franklinton in 1812 and named it for Columbus during a wave of post-revolutionary enthusiasm for the explorer as a non-British founding figure. The Latin surname simply means 'dove.'
