The meaning
“Ash tree”
How it got the name
Spanish-speaking Californians called the river the Rio de los Fresnos for the ash trees on its banks. The county took the name in 1856, and the Central Pacific station that became the city followed in 1872. The ash tree still appears on the county seal.
