The meaning
“Green bay (La Baye Verte)”
How it got the name
French traders called it La Baye Verte because the algae-rich water turns visibly green earlier in the season than the surrounding lake. The English translated it directly. It is the oldest permanent European settlement in Wisconsin, dating to Jean Nicolet's landing in 1634.
