Honolulu

Hawaii (HI)est. 1795pop. 343,421/hoh-noh-LOO-loo/

The meaning

“Sheltered harbor / calm port”

How it got the name

Hono means harbor or bay; lulu means calm or sheltered. The name describes exactly what made the place matter: a reef-protected deep-water anchorage, rare in the Pacific, that turned a fishing village into the crossroads of the whaling and sandalwood trades.
