The meaning

“City of Indiana”

How it got the name

Jeremiah Sullivan bolted the Greek polis onto 'Indiana' in 1821. Critics called it a monstrosity — one legislator said it sounded like a disease. Indiana itself is a Latinate coinage meaning 'land of the Indians,' a name applied to the territory long before the state existed.
