Kansas City

Missouri (MO)est. 1838pop. 510,704/KAN-zuhs SIT-ee/

The meaning

“People of the south wind”

How it got the name

The Kansas River carried the name of the Kansa or Kaw nation, generally translated 'people of the south wind.' The town at the confluence with the Missouri became the City of Kansas, then Kansas City — and it sits in Missouri, which endlessly confuses visitors flying into a Missouri airport named for a different state's river.
