The meaning
“Colony by the pool (Lindum Colonia)”
How it got the name
The village of Lancaster was renamed in 1867 by legislators from the south of the state — who were hoping that honoring the recently assassinated president would so offend pro-Confederate northern legislators that they would block the capital move. The tactic backfired, and Lincoln got the capital. The English city name comes from Roman Lindum Colonia, 'the colony at the pool.'
