The meaning

“Those going against the current / upstream people”

How it got the name

The Omaha call themselves Umonhon, understood as 'those who go against the current' — a reference to their migration up the Missouri while a related group went downstream and became the Quapaw, 'the downstream people.' The city on the river kept the upstream name.
