How it got the name
Residents chose between Athens and Oshkosh in an 1840 vote and picked the Menominee leader, whose name means 'his claw' or 'brave.' Chief Oshkosh reportedly attended the naming celebration. The name later circled the globe on a brand of children's overalls.
