The meaning
“Saint Anthony”
How it got the name
A Spanish expedition camped by the river on June 13, 1691 — the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua — and named the waterway for him. The mission and presidio founded in 1718 took the river's name. The mission itself later got a nickname from the cottonwood trees around it: alamo.
