The meaning
“Falls of the 'lesser adders'”
How it got the name
'Sioux' is a French clipping of the Ojibwe word nadouessioux, an unflattering term for a rival people often read as 'lesser adders' or 'snakes.' The Dakota, Lakota and Nakota use their own names. The city is straightforwardly named for the quartzite cascades at its center.
