The meaning
“Saint Louis”
How it got the name
Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau founded the fur-trading post in 1764 and named it for the crusading king Louis IX — a compliment aimed sideways at the reigning Louis XV, who shared the saint's name. Locals say 'Saint LOO-is'; the French 'Loo-ee' marks a tourist.
