Tallahassee

Florida (FL)est. 1824pop. 202,221/tal-uh-HAS-ee/

The meaning

“Old fields / old town”

How it got the name

When Creek migrants moved into the region they found cleared farmland left behind by the Apalachee, who had been devastated by raids and disease. They called it talahassee — 'old fields.' The Florida legislature picked the site for a capital in 1824 precisely because it sat halfway between the rival cities of Pensacola and St. Augustine.
