The meaning

β€œAt the base of the black hill (Cuk Son)”

How it got the name

The O'odham name Cuk Son describes Sentinel Peak, whose dark basalt cap sits above the Santa Cruz river. Spanish ears rendered it Tucson, and the silent c has been baffling outsiders ever since.
