The meaning
“Old town”
How it got the name
Creek people forced west on the Trail of Tears carried ashes from their ceremonial fire in Talisi, Alabama, and rekindled it beneath a great oak on the Arkansas River. They gave the new place the old town's name. Tulsa and Tallahassee are, at root, the same word.
