The meaning

“Falls of the Wichita River”

How it got the name

The town was named for a modest cascade on the Wichita River. A flood destroyed the falls in 1886, leaving the city named for a landmark that no longer existed. In 1987 residents built an artificial 54-foot waterfall so the name would make sense again.
